6 Things You Didn’t Know About Skydiving!

Skydiving. It’s on everyone’s bucket list right? But how much do you actually know about it? For example did you know…

1: Faster than a speeding bullet?

Well, not quite, but with speeds of up to 200km per hour you will feel like you are a bullet! Experiencing the thrill of free fall is something you’ll never forget.

2: Your tandem instructor has spent hours in freefall!

Our staff are trained to the highest possible level. When you skydive you will be strapping yourself to someone who has literally spent hours, days and sometime even weeks in freefall! Imagine that!

3: People have been skydiving for hundreds of years!

On October 22, 1797 in Paris, a brave soul called Andre-Jacques Garnerin made the first recorded parachute jump. He tested his invention by jumping from a hydrogen balloon from 3,200 feet.

4: Skydiving is a sport

Worldwide skydiving has an active sports scene. With local and International competitive events, in multiple disciplines, jumping out of a perfectly good airplane doesn’t have to be a once-in-a-lifetime thrill! Many people skydive as a hobby as well. Skydive Bay of Islands welcomes sports skydivers and can even teach you how! Find out more here >

5: You can skydive indoors (sort of)

While they can’t truly recreate the experience as jumping out of a plane, vertical wind tunnels or indoor skydiving centers are becoming increasingly popular. New Zealand’s first wind tunnel is being built in Queenstown. Vertical wind tunnels are also used as a training tool for skydivers.

6: Skydiving – not just for humans!

We love to take our pets everywhere, but did you know you can take them skydiving?! That’s right, cats and dogs alike have skydived while safely fastened to their owners, and apparently they love it! We think we’ll just leave our dropzone dog, Jamie, safely on the ground though…
